WERU Presents the Farm Fresh Live Radio Auction on June 6

Community Radio WERU-FM (89.9 Blue Hill, 99.9 Bangor) supports local growth and sustainability in a variety of ways. As part of the diverse community it serves, WERU contributes to a quality of life that only a grassroots volunteer powered local radio station can. In recent years Maine has been part of a growing small farmer and local foods movement that contributes to everyone’s well being. In appreciation and support of this quiet revolution, WERU presents the Farm Fresh Live Radio Auction on Thursday, June 6 from 6:00-8:30pm.

On June 6th listeners can call 1-800-643-6273 to bid on 53 local food items donated by local farms, farmers markets, fishermen and food producers in 38 towns within WERU’s broadcast area from Dover Foxcroft to Fort Clyde, Gouldsboro to Waterville. The benefit auction is sponsored by Johnny’s Selected Seeds (www.johnnysseeds.com) in Albion, a local company long part of this farm and garden revolution.

The WERU Farm Fresh Live Radio Auction is part of the station’s year-long celebration of its 25th anniversary, offering 53 opportunities for listeners to meet and support local farmers who are revolutionizing the local economy and keeping the landscape green and fertile. “Farmers have always been among WERU’s listeners,” notes Matt Murphy, WERU station manager, “and the WERU Farm Fresh Live Radio Auction offers an entire season of great local foods direct from local producers.”

Donated certificates allow buyers to shop at any farm stall at farmers markets in Ellsworth, Blue Hill, Brooklin, Stonington, Orono, Brewer, and Bangor. Farms across the central Maine and coastal area offer certificates for their produce, available at the farm or at more than a dozen farmers markets. Several farms have given Community Supported Agriculture shares, where every week during the growing season shareholders pick up a bagful of fresh produce at the farm. Black Bear Food Guild in Orono offers a half share for a full season of produce harvested weekly, Cheryl Wixson’s Kitchen offers a “kitchen share” monthly from November through April, and other farms in other areas offer trial shares for a few weeks.

More specifically, items to be auctioned include locally grown vegetables, fruits, flowers, herbs, perennials, medicinal and native plants, seedlings; dairy products (eggs, milk, yogurt, fresh and aged cheeses, cajeta); pasture-raised meats and locally made sausages; fresh fish, and cherrystone clams; U-pick strawberries and apples, organic straw bales and composted goat manure (“nannyberries”) for farm or garden; preserves, condiments, and hand-made sauces made from local produce. “Much of this produce is organically grown,” says auction organizer Pat Fowler, “and all of it is harvested locally by farmers and fishermen who care about their land and community.”
