BANGOR, Maine — The concert promoter who helped transform the Bangor waterfront into a nationally known entertainment venue will be the keynote speaker at the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting on Jan. 7.

Alex Gray, president of Waterfront Concerts Inc., will discuss Bangor’s transformation into a destination for entertainment and the role his concert series has played in the city’s resurgence.

Gray’s company has worked with the city of Bangor to bring some of the biggest names in the music business to Bangor to play before thousands at a specially designed concert venue. Artists ranging from Sting to Ke$ha to country stars like Toby Keith have come to Bangor over the past four years.

“It’s especially fitting that Alex will be addressing our members at our annual meeting at the Cross Insurance Center,” said John Porter, president and CEO of the Bangor Region Chamber. “The new arena and convention center, along with new entertainment options that include the Waterfront Concert Series, have really helped to put Bangor on the map as a destination.”

The Chamber’s annual meeting is a breakfast event at which the Chamber installs new board members and officers.

This coming year, Renee Kelly, director of economic development initiatives at the University of Maine, will be taking over as board chair of the Chamber from the outgoing chair, Andrew Hamilton of Eaton Peabody Law firm. Andrew Sturgeon, an executive with Cross Insurance and a representative of the Action Committee of 50 on the Chamber’s board, will step in as chair-elect. John Simpson, a consultant and the retired CEO of H.E. Sargent Inc., will become treasurer.

Additionally, two area business leaders will be joining the Chamber board during the annual meeting: David J. Dunning, vice president of marketing and human resources with S.W. Cole Engineering Inc., and Bob Potts, communications specialist at Emera Maine.

The Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce annual Breakfast Meeting is the organization’s largest breakfast event of the year and is expected to draw more than 300 people. Sponsored by Machias Savings Bank, the breakfast is set for 7-9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Award sponsor is Varney Agency and keynote sponsor is Lane Construction. Tickets can be purchased online at, by phone at (207) 947-0307 or at the Chamber’s offices at 20 South St., Bangor.
