Washington Academy announces Class of 2019 honor parts

EAST MACHIAS — Judson McBrine, Head of School at Washington Academy in East Machias, proudly announces the honor parts for the graduating Class of 2019 as follows:

Earning distinction as Valedictorian is Genevieve Wakeman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Wakeman of Addison. Genevieve is a high honor student and is the recipient of the 2017-18  Washington Academy Achievement and Excellence Award for AP Calculus and Husson Anatomy & Physiology. She is currently a Pre-Calculus Teaching Assistant. Genevieve spends many of her high school afternoons at the Bangor Ballet as a dance soloist and teacher. She plans on attending college this fall majoring in Pre-Medicine.  

This year’s Salutatorian is Rachel Maker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Maker of Machiasport. Rachel is a 3-year National Honor Society Member and the current NHS Historian and Library Teaching Assistant.  She is also the recipient of the Washington Academy 2015-16 Quarter 3 Academic Excellence Award. Rachel will attend the University of Maine at Machias and is undecided on a major at this time.

First Honor Essayist for Washington Academy’s Class of 2019 is Kate Somes, daughter of Sara Somes of Columbia Falls, and Adam Somes of Cherryfield. Kate is a well rounded Washington Academy student. She is the current Vice President of the National Honor Society and President of the Student Council. In addition to her leadership roles, Kate has participated on numerous athletic teams, acted and directed in WA Drama Club productions, and most recently received the 2019 Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. Kate is also the 2019 Maine Principals’ Association Award recipient. This award is given by the Head of School in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship. Kate is the recipient of the Washington Academy 2015-16 Quarter 1 Academic Excellence Award and the 2018-19 Quarter 2 and 3 Citizenship award. She will attend Husson University in the fall majoring in Marketing and Communications.

Second Honor Essayist is Rosemary Corkins, daughter of Patricia Corkins of Pembroke. Rosemary is a 3-year member of the National Honor Society and the 2018-19 Secretary. She is also the recipient of the 2018-19 University of Maine Women in Engineering Award for Excellence. Rosemary is a dedicated 4-year member of the WA Drama Club. She is also an AP Calculus Teaching Assistant. She will be attending Colby College this fall majoring in Chemistry with a Pre-Medicine track.

Baccalaureate service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, and Graduation ceremonies will commence at 1  p.m. Monday, June 3. All events will be held in the Washington Academy Gardner Gymnasium.
