Judson McBrine, Head of School at Washington Academy in East Machias, proudly announces the honor parts for the graduating Class of 2018 as follows:
Earning distinction as co-valedictorians are Cameryn Farnsworth, daughter of Tracy and Theresa Farnsworth of East Machias and Lydia Sprague, daughter of Chris and Lauren Sprague of Marshfield. Cameryn has been an active member of the student body participating in the National Honor Society, Student Council, Students Teaching About Respect (STARS), Teens 4 Christ, Science Club, A capella Club, JV and Varsity Basketball, and Varsity Tennis. Cameryn has also been the recipient of Washington Academy’s 2014-15 Quarter 1 Academic Award, 2016-17 Quarter 2 Citizenship Award, and 2018 Kindness Award. Most recently Cameryn was awarded the 2018 Principal’s Award, sponsored by the Maine Principals Association, in recognition of her citizenship qualities and academic achievements. Cameryn will be attending Cairn University and majoring in Youth and Family Ministries.
Lydia has been an active member of the Class of 2018 participating in the National Honor Society, Students Teaching About Respect (STARS), Teens 4 Christ, Varsity Volleyball and Track and Field. Lydia has been the recipient of Washington Academy’s 2014-15 Quarter 1 Citizenship Award and the 2016-17 Quarter 3 Academics Award. Lydia will be attending the University of Maine at Machias and majoring in liberal studies/nursing.
This year’s salutatorian is Richard Lyons, son of Jason and Michelle Lyons of Lubec. Throughout his four years at Washington Academy, Richard has been a high honors student and a dedicated member of the Washington Academy Band and Jazz Band. He has been the recipient of Washington Academy’s 2014-15 Quarter 2 Citizenship Award and the 2016-17 Quarter 2 Academic Award. Richard will be attending the University of Maine at Machias and majoring in business.
First Honor Essayist for Washington Academy’s Class of 2018 is Jodie Harris, daughter of Shawn and Denise Harris of Perry. Jodie has been a well rounded Washington Academy student. She has been a member of the National Honor Society, Students Teaching About Respect (STARS) group, Envirothon and Sustainability Clubs. In addition she has been a four year participant on the Varsity Swim Team, and a two year participant of the JV Volleyball team and Pep Band. Jodie has been the recipient of Washington Academy’s 2015-16 Quarter 2 Academic Award and the 2017-18 Quarter 2 Kindness Award. Jodie will be attending the University of New England and majoring in medical biology.
Second Honor Essayist is Kiara Kempthorne-Curiel, daughter of Nathan and Esther Kempthorne of Milbridge. Kiara is a member of the National Honor Society and has participated in JV Soccer and Cheer. She has been the recipient of Washington Academy’s 2015-16 Quarter 3 Academic Award. In 2017 her passion for engineering and math earned her the distinct honor of receiving the Society of Women Engineers Merit Award. Kiara will be attending the University of Maine at Orono and majoring in mechanical engineering.
Washington Academy will honor these students at a school wide assembly on Thursday, May 10. A Baccalaureate service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 3 and graduation ceremonies will commence at 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 4. All events will be held in the Washington Academy’s Gardner Gymnasium.
