Verrill Dana builds intellectual property, privacy, data security Practice as Rita Heimes Joins the Firm

Rita Heimes to join Verrill Dana's Intellectual Property Group

PORTLAND, Maine — Verrill Dana has announced the expansion of its intellectual property group with the addition of Rita S. Heimes, who will be joining Verrill Dana as Counsel. In addition to working on traditional intellectual property matters, Rita brings a special interest in the intersection of law and technology, specifically as it relates to cybersecurity and data privacy.

Rita is currently the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Maine School of Law, where she also serves as the Director of the Center for Law and Innovation and teaches courses on various intellectual property subjects including Trademark and Copyright Law. Rita has also been coordinating the Information Privacy Summer Institute in collaboration with the International Association of Privacy Professionals. Rita will remain at the Law School until the end of this semester and will begin at Verrill Dana on August 1, 2014. She will maintain a role with Maine Law to foster its information privacy program.

Rita received her undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa, and received her J.D., with honors, from Drake University Law School, where she was an editor of the Drake Law Review. After law school, Rita served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Robert R. Beezer of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Rita worked at Verrill Dana as an associate from 1998 to 2001, before leaving to join the Law School.
