MACHIAS, Maine – A proposed national park in northern Maine will take center stage at the University of Maine at Machias, where two upcoming speakers will advocate for and against the park proposal.

State Senator Cynthia Dill (D-Cape Elizabeth) will speak in favor of the Maine Woods National Park during a presentation at UMM on Wednesday, January 25. Millinocket Town Manager Eugene Conlogue, an opponent of the national park proposal, will speak on Wednesday, February 8. Both events will take place at 7 p.m. in the Portside room of Kimball Hall.

Senator Dill is the founder of Friends of the Maine Woods, an advocacy group formed with the purpose of educating communities about the economic, environmental, and social benefits of public land stewardship, and to support the study and creation of the Maine Woods National Park.
Conlogue is a member of the Maine Woods Coalition, a public interest group concerned with the prospect of sudden and substantial changes to the current use patterns of the North Maine Woods. The group promotes the current relationship between private owners of large tracts of land and the access allowed to the general public.

The talks are free and open to the public and will also be streamed live on the UMM Web site at There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion following each presentation.
The presentations for and against the proposed Maine Woods National Park are part of UMM’s ongoing efforts as New England’s only public Environmental Liberal Arts institution. For more information, contact Jon Reisman at or 255-1242.
