AUGUSTA, Maine — The University of Maine at Augusta’s Office of University Advancement has announced the establishment of an endowed scholarship named the Marcel Raymond Scholarship for the Study of French at UMA.

Named after donor Marcel Raymond of Lewiston, who also gifted his collection of French books and other French cultural artifacts to UMA in 2011, the scholarship will provide financial assistance for related expenses such as tuition, travel, or immersion programs for UMA students enrolled in the French Minor.

UMA recently approved two newly created travel courses, one to Blueberry Cove “French by the Sea” immersion weekend and the other to Quebec city for a travel experience in which students will use the city as their learning environment.

“Many of our students cannot afford to travel or participate in immersion courses, and we are grateful to Marcel Raymond for his generous support of French at UMA,” said Dr. Chelsea Ray, Associate Professor of French, in a press release. “Language learning is vital to our future success, and this scholarship will help UMA students realize their dream of an immersion experience here in Maine, in Québec, or at the University of Western Brittany, our partner institution in France.”
