BANGOR, MAINE – June 19, 2014 – The Robert E. White Gallery at Husson University will feature paintings by Kay Carter from June 30 through September 4, 2014. The exhibit, “Windows and Doors: Crossing Boundaries,” focuses on how we organize ourselves in ways that are not always obvious, and the boundaries which define us.
“For 40 years my work was in human services. The work was challenging, worthy, and rewarding. I didn’t know, however, how much delight one could experience until I retired in 2008 and focused my energy on exploring the world through visual arts. I am now unapologetically in love with form, color, space and the beautiful State of Maine” says Carter.
Carter’s work focuses on places where she has hiked, camped, and lived. She also creates paintings which celebrate the mundane events in the cycle of years – everything from hanging the clothes outside on a windy spring day to processing strawberries picked from the fields in early summer.
On her website, Carter states: “In the process of painting, I am challenged to see beyond the finite and find not only the rhythms, colors and patterns unique to the subject at hand but also the tensions and energy which reflect a more infinite whole.”
Her art education started with an inspiring teacher in junior high school. She recently completed the studio art curriculum at the University of Maine. Her passion for creating over the years has led to explorations of pottery, calligraphy, Jacobean crewel work, and rug hooking.
Recent exhibitions of her work include the Maine Juried Art Show (2013) in Waterville, Maine, the University of Maine Juried Student Art exhibit (2011), the Bangor Art Society Juried Show (2013), and a one person showing at the Bangor Art Walk (June 2013).
The artist’s reception will be held at the White Gallery on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 5:00 -7:00 pm.
The Robert E. White Gallery is located in Peabody Hall on the Bangor campus of Husson University. Exhibitions are free and open to the public. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. For additional information contact 207-941-7887.
