Drew Barton, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biology, Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Maine at Farmington and author of The Changing Nature of the Maine Woods will be speaking at the Jesup Memorial Library on Thursday, August 2nd at 7:00 p.m. His book, which he co-authored with Alan S. White and Charles V. Cogbill, is both a fascinating introduction to the forests of Maine as well as a detailed but accessible narrative of the dynamism of these ecosystems. It is a natural history with a long view, starting with an overview of the state’s geological history, the reemergence of the forest after glacial retreat, and the surprising changes right up to European arrival. The book is ambitious in its geographic range, conveying a clear sense of how and why Maine forests differ across the length and breadth of the state, from the top of Mount Katahdin to the coast. The authors assess key ecological forces to create a dramatic portrait of Maine forests—past, present, and future. The Jesup Library and Sherman’s Book Store, co-hosts of this event are looking forward to Drew’s talk and welcome all to this informative discussion of The Changing Nature of the Maine Woods. Sherman’s will have books on hand for purchase before and after the event for purchase and signing by the author.
