Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center, 521 Main Street in Damariscotta will host its Wednesday Lunch and Learn program on August 6 at 11:15am. Following the luncheon Alison Rieser, will present a program titled “The Case for the Sea Turtle Farm”. Rieser will tell the story of how scientists studying sea turtles in the 1960’s tried to save them from going extinct due to the popularity of green turtle soup. Alison’s program based on her 2012 book, The Case of the Green Turtle: An Uncensored History of a Conservation Icon.
Since 2006, Rieser has been the Dai Ho Chun professor of ocean governance at the University of Hawai’i and director of the Graduate Ocean Policy Certificate
Program in the College of Social Sciences. She’s also professor emeriti at the University of Maine School of Law, where she taught environmental law and ocean and coastal law for over 20 years. Although Alison now teaches in a geography department, she considers herself only an accidental geographer: “my training and scholarship are in marine law and policy”. She earned a bachelor of science in human ecology from Cornell University in 1973 and a J.D. cum laude from The George Washington University School of Law in 1976. After law school and a brief stint as a lawyer for the U.S. oceans agency, Rieser was a post-doctoral fellow in marine policy and ocean management at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (est. 1930). She established a marine policy research program at the Marine Law Institute in Portland, Maine in 1980 and began law teaching in 1986; after teaching at the Maine Law School for three years, she returned to law school, earning an LL.M. from Yale Law School in 1990. In 1999 Alison became the only law professor to be named a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation.

For those over 60 years of age the suggested donation is $5.00 per person. For all others Coastal Lunch and Learn program is an affordable dining choice at $6.00 per person.
Can’t make it to lunch? Community members are always welcome to attend the Center’s Wednesday Learn portion of the day’s Lunch and Learn program, which will begin at noon.

Cribbage or Scrabble: After Lunch Pick-Up Games. Fee $1. Free for luncheon guests. Wednesdays, 1 PM.
Conversational French: Get Together with Suzanne Hedrick is a great way to renew your French language skills. Fee $5. Wednesdays, 1 PM.
