AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — Individuals who volunteer to raise money for worthy causes or who just want to find out how to best plan for their families are invited to take part in a free planned giving seminar being hosted by the TAMC Foundation 1-4 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at the hospital’s conference center.

“We wanted to provide an opportunity for people to learn more about the importance of estate planning and on the different options of how to give to charity if they are so inclined,” explained Virginia Joles, philanthropy lead for the TAMC Foundation and organizer of the event, in a press release. Joles pointed out that while the event is being hosted by TAMC, it is informational only and is not intended to in any way to promote giving to the TAMC or EMHS Foundation.

The free seminar will feature two local presenters who have a great deal of experience in planned giving.  They will each draw on that experience to give guidance to participants and answer questions that they may have.

Leading off the seminar will be Richard Engels, a local attorney who has been practicing law in Presque Isle for more than 45 years. For the past two decades, his work has been concentrated in estate planning, real estate, elder law, corporate law and business planning.  Engels will discuss basic estate planning documents, powers of attorney, wills, probate, the use of trusts in estate planning, and charitable aspects of estate planning.

Expanding on that message of charitable giving will be Brian Hamel, managing partner of the Presque Isle-based financial services firm of Thompson-Hamel, LLC. Hamel is a Series 7 Securities Representative and a licensed Life & Health Insurance Producer, providing clients with estate planning, investment and insurance services.

Facilitating the three-hour seminar will be Joseph Connors, senior director of philanthropy, planned giving for the EMHS Foundation.  Connors oversees the planned giving department of EMHS Foundation, working closely with the philanthropy officers of the member hospitals, including TAMC, and affiliate organizations.  Prior to joining EMHS Foundation, Connors was in private legal practice, where he focused his practice in the areas of trusts, estates and other probate-related matters.

Individuals who are interested in attending the free planned giving seminar should register online at www.tamc.org or contact Joles by phone at 207-760-4350.
