NEWRY, Maine — In an effort to bolster interest and participation in active living events among outdoor enthusiasts, Sunday River will host the third stop of Team Athletes Multisport Partnership’s Winter Wild eight-race series Saturday, Jan. 25. The Winter Wild Race asks participants to do something not typically done in the world of downhill: go uphill.
An uphill race with a twist, the Winter Wild format is broken into four categories by age group: Open (microspikes, running shoes, snowshoes, etc.), Track Skis (lightweight skiing/diagonal gear), Telemark, and Heavy Metal (alpine skis, randonee bindings, plastic boots).
Whichever gear the participant uses to make it up the first half of Sunday River’s 4.15-mile long course is what s/he must use to make it back down. The only exception applies to snowboarders, who are allowed to carry their boards uphill and ride back down.  No sleds or blades are allowed in this event.
Sunday River’s Winter Wild Race course is based out of White Cap basin and climbs up the Tempest trail to the Upper Sunday Punch trail before reaching the summit of Locke Mountain. From there, racers will descend the Lazy River trail to Tourist Trap, and on to Roadrunner, before completing the loop at White Cap.
Following the race, there will be an awards ceremony inside of the White Cap Lodge, where prizes will be presented to the top three male and female competitors in each category (by age group).
Registration for this event is $20 pre-race, online, or $25 the day of the race. Registrants can save $5 on the pre-race fee by using the coupon code “wintermotivation” online through this Thursday, January 23.
Registrants also qualify for special event day lift tickets ($50) that can be purchased on race day.
