ROCKPORT – The Beacon Fund was established in January of this year by the Lily Hamill and Nick Brown of Stone Coast CrossFit in Rockport in honor of their dog Beacon. Beacon is beloved not only by Lily and Nick but by the entire membership of Stone Coast CrossFit where Beacon is a regular visitor, cheerleader and coach. When the gym learned that Beacon has bilateral hip dysplasia and was going to need an expensive surgery, they decided to help. Gym member Sara Littlefield and CrossFit trainer Eric Blumenthal organized Barbells for Beacon, a fundraising CrossFit-style work out called “Walk the Dog” complete with fabulous event t-shirts.

Lily and Nick quickly realized two things – that the enthusiasm of their members was going to raise more than the necessary amount to help with Beacon’s surgery and that there were many other animals in need of surgical procedures – both emergency surgery and procedures to improve their quality of life – where cost would be a huge barrier. Lily and Nick decided to focus their attention on shelter animals and contacted P.A.W.S. Animal Adoption Center to see what they could do. Together they have created the Beacon Fund.

On February 1st, 38 athletes and a crowd of supporters gathered at Stone Coast CrossFit for the first Barbells for Beacon competition. The event successfully raised the funds for Beacon’s surgery and close to $600 for the Beacon Fund.

Donations made to the Beacon Fund will be set aside for animals at P.A.W.S. in need of surgery. This could be anything from a stray dog found with a broken leg or a cat in need of dental surgery in order to eat normally and have a pain free life. Barbells for Beacon will become an annual event at Stone Coast CrossFit, with all proceeds supporting the Beacon Fund at P.A.W.S. Donations to the Beacon Fund can be made at any time online at or by mail to P.A.W.S. at P.O. Box 707, Rockport, ME 04856; just note “Beacon” in the memo line of your check.
