AUGUSTA, Maine — As part of Maine Catholic Schools Week Jan. 26-Feb. 1, students and staff at St. Michael Catholic School in Augusta will collect donations to benefit Augusta Warming Center and the Family Violence Project. The directors of both organizations will be presented with the collection at a schoolwide assembly at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31.

The Augusta Warming Center, 44 Front St., provides a place for individuals and families to find a safe escape from the cold each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is funded primarily by the United Way of Kennebec Valley and stays open through March.

The Family Violence Project in Augusta helps people dealing with abuse and violence; offers prevention education and training programs; and encourages people to recognize the destructive nature of abuse and violence and to discover what they can do to end the cycle.

“Both organizations require similar products that help them run their programs,” said Janet Galati, principal of St. Michael Catholic School, in a diocese press relese. “We are going to ask children to bring in personal-sized toiletries, paper products and coffee products to help the shelter and transition families as well. We want our children to understand that the little things we take for granted are of great value to those in need.”

The service project is part of the annual Maine Catholic Schools Week, which celebrates the mission of Catholic Schools: to evangelize students by nourishing faith and encouraging academic excellence while accentuating the importance of community and service in a nurturing environment.

As part of the weeklong celebration, St. Michael Catholic School will host a variety of special events. For a complete schedule of Maine Catholic Schools Week activities at St. Michael Catholic School, visit www.portlanddiocese.org/content/st-michael-school-augusta#overlay=node/560/edit
