CANAAN, Maine  — Women are the fastest growing segment of the hunting and shooting sports world. Women also make many of the decisions on family activities and this makes educating women in the joys of hunting and the shooting sports important for the future of the sport.

Silverton Sporting Ranch is hosting a Ladies Only Hunter Safety class. Upon successful completion of the class, participants will receive their Maine Hunter Safety certificate. This will be a home study class offering women the opportunity to do the course work on their own schedule as much as possible. The first class will be 6-9 p.m. April 17, with the second class 8:30-4 p.m. April 27. There will be an opportunity for those that would like to stay after the completion of the course on April 27 to shoot a round of clay targets on Silverton’s 5 stand field.  For more information on Maine’s Hunter Safety Course go to http://maine.gov/ifw/education/safety/firearm.htm

Pre-registration is required. Participants can sign up on Facebook at Silverton Sporting Ranch for  the event or to reserve your spot contact Denise Murchison at 399-3647 or email info@silvertonsportingranch.com

According to Silverton Sporting Ranch owner, Denise Murchison, “There is an increased interest in the shooting sports and hunting among women and the opportunity to learn in an environment of women is very important to getting women started and on the right track. “

The 4-H Shooting Sports Program is growing in Maine in part due to a partnership between Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and Bryant Pond 4-H Camp.
