BAR HARBOR — Sarah Catanese, vice president at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, received the “Sparks Award” from the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce at its annual meeting on May 17. The Sparks Award is presented annually to a graduate of Leadership Hancock County who has exhibited exemplary leadership initiative in Hancock County.
Since her 2012 graduation from Leadership Hancock County, Catanese has continued to be involved deeply with Leadership Hancock County, as well as other emerging community initiatives. She was in on the ground floor as Union Square was taking shape; i.e. the “young professionals” arm of the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce. Catanese also gave of her time and talent to help shape an emergent vision for Leadership Hancock County 2.0.
“I always marveled to observe that in every conversation and project, Sarah brought light and her brilliant smile, and consistently fostered a sense of shared understanding in our class,” said Rachel Nobel who was in the 2012 Leadership Hancock County class with Catanese. “This wasn’t easy, as this was a group of strong minded individuals who all came from very different backgrounds and reflected a healthy diversity of leadership styles and approaches.”
Sarah Catanese joined Bar Harbor Bank & Trust in 2015 as VP/Branch Relationship Manager in Ellsworth. In 2017 she transitioned to VP/Brand Manager. Prior to her banking career, she was the director of Programs and Operations at Camp Beech Cliff in Mount Desert. Catanese holds a bachelor’s degree from Green Mountain College in Vermont. She is a graduate of the Northern New England School of Banking and Leadership Hancock County. Born and raised in Cape Cod, Catanese moved to Maine in 2008. She resides in Trenton with her husband, Andrew, and their two children, and serves as a member of the Trenton School Board. At work she always places her team front and center to shine, and consistently opens doors for those she mentors by encouraging them to step forward and make connections in community. She introduces them to local leaders, and supports their participation and engagement in the local community,

The Sparks Award is named after one of the founders of Leadership Hancock County, Bonnie Sparks, who worked for many years to collaborate and help build the amazing structure that is Leadership Hancock County today.
