The Student Support Services TRiO program at the University of Maine at Fort Kent is pleased to announce the selection of Russ Mortland, a senior nursing major, as its first TRiO Student of the Semester, for the fall 2012 semester.

TRiO understands the hard work, effort, and determination students put not only into their academic goals, but into their communities. Mortland’s achievements symbolize the qualities of a successful TRiO student. As an active writing tutor, Russ gives back, both to the TRiO community and to the general campus community by providing quality tutoring to his peers. Additionally, Russ has served for a long time as a campus tour guide.

Mortland, a native of Presque Isle, is an active member of the TRiO community, enjoying the campus’ new Learning Center and often using its rooms for his studies as a nursing major. Having recently achieved his choice of preceptorships, he is poised to graduate in the spring with the work experience he desires in an emergency room unit.

Overall, Mortland has moved through the TRiO program, achieving his academic goals and using that success to benefit the entire TRiO community.

The Student Support Services TRiO program at UMFK serves 160 students as they pursue their academic, personal, and career goals. The Student Support Services TRiO program is designed to improve academic performance, increase student motivation, and increase persistence and retention rates.
