President Obama and Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco

Inaugural poet Richard Blanco will be at Left Bank Books on Saturday, August 2, as part of the bookshop’s tenth birthday celebration. Blanco was chosen to serve as the fifth inaugural poet of the United States, following in the footsteps of such great writers as Robert Frost and Maya Angelou. He read his original poem, “One Today,” at President Obama’s inauguration ceremony on January 21, 2013. That day confirmed him as an historical figure: the first Latino, immigrant, and gay writer bestowed with such an honor, as well as the youngest ever (44).

After his talk, Blanco will sign copies of his books of poetry, including the lovely, commemorative copy of “One Today,” and “For All of Us, One Today: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey,” hailed by Anderson Cooper as “A moving, intimate memoir. . .not just about one poet’s journey but about the power of poetry to capture moments, to transform lives, and to illuminate lives.”

The public is cordially invited to attend the talk (which will take place across the street from the bookshop, at the First Church of Belfast) and signing at no charge. However, reservations are strongly recommended to ensure adequate seating. Call the shop at 207-338-9009 or email (leftbank@myfairpoint.net) to reserve a seat or for more information.

Blanco will speak beginning at 5:00 pm; the signing will take place immediately following.
