Registration is now open for a fun and innovative writing and art program for seventh and eighth-graders from towns on Mount Desert Island, the outer islands and Trenton Elementary — all of MDIRSS and home-schoolers from those areas.
The ARROW Retreat will give them the chance to work with Newbery Honor author Gary Schmidt, artist and picture book author Rebekah Raye and naturalist Rich MacDonald during four afternoons during spring break, April 15-18, at Camp Beech Cliff in Mount Desert. There will be one-on-one sessions with the professionals, group sessions and small-group work with peers, plus take-home assignments. Participants will create their own stories and drawings during the week and showcase them in an exhibition at the end of the retreat.
ARROW is Art-Reading-Reflection-Observation-Writing.
There is no charge to attend the retreat. It is sponsored by MDI-based Island Readers & Writers, a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring a passion for reading and learning in children.
All ARROW Retreat participants will get a journal, art supplies and a copy of Gary’s wonderful book, “Okay for Now,” which was a finalist in 2011 for the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature.
Registration is online only, and on a first-come, first-served basis. Spots are available for 30 seventh-graders and 30 eighth-graders.
