BANGOR — The Northern and Eastern Maine Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking volunteers for disaster response and preparedness programs and in other areas that further the organization’s humanitarian mission.

Interested individuals can meet volunteers and staff at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at the Bangor office, 145 Exchange St., to learn more about local opportunities.

Red Cross volunteers make a significant impact on the community. In the past fiscal year, they’ve responded to 103 disasters in the Northern and Eastern Maine Chapter, assisted 323 individuals affected by home fires and other disasters, installed 2,079 free smoke alarms and provided assistance to 96 service members, veterans or their families.

“It’s the power of volunteers that makes it possible for the Red Cross to help so many people in our community who are facing emergencies,” said Caroline King, executive director of the Northern and Eastern Maine Chapter.  “Learn how you can make a difference by offering comfort and hope to those in need.”

Volunteers make up 90 percent of the American Red Cross workforce. By mobilizing the power of volunteers, the Red Cross responds to a disaster every eight minutes, providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities to affected individuals and helping them begin their road to recovery.

The Red Cross also provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families at home and around the world, collects 40 percent of the nation’s blood, trains people in first aid, water safety and other lifesaving skills and makes communities safer through disaster preparedness measures.
