Record Heating Costs this Season

The recent decline in the cost of heating oil is scant relief for Maine homeowners, who paid record high prices to heat their homes this year.

According to the Governor’s Energy Office, heating oil averaged $3.71 a gallon for the winter season. That means that the average homeowner, who uses 850 gallons of heating oil a year, spent $3,153 to stay warm, nearly twice what an average Maine homeowner paid for heat in the 2004-2005 season, Energy Office officials say.

The cost of oil is out of your hands, but investing in energy efficiency offers a clear pathway to reducing your energy needs. Efficiency is regularly called our cheapest, cleanest energy source, and Efficiency Maine’s $600 rebates and long-term, low-interest loans make it even more affordable.

A FREE Energy Consult with Evergreen Home Performance can help you understand your options and install energy efficiency upgrades that pay for themselves in comfort and savings. Midcoast Maine homeowners working with Evergreen typically cut their heating bills by 25-50 percent so no matter what happens to the price of oil, they’re buying a lot less.
