YORK, Maine — Phil Cihiwsky, recent recipient of a volunteer award from President Obama, will end a seven-month trek to raise awareness and funding for Meals on Wheels across the United States.

Southern Maine Agency on Aging, the official Meals on Wheels provider for York and Cumberland counties, held a finish line celebration at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, on Harbor Beach Road in York. Meals on Wheels supporters from Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts gathered at the finish line. Cihiwsky began his trek at the Pacific Ocean and ended his trek in the waters of York Harbor.

A 59 year-old recent Colorado retiree and avid year-round “weekend walker,” Cihiwsky, began his journey in San Diego in March. Upon learning that Phil’s journey would start in San Diego, Phil’s friend and long-time supporter of Meals on Wheels of Greater San Diego, Rob Dunn, suggested that he use his journey to bring awareness to the need to fight senior hunger and isolation.

During his journey, Cihiwsky has visited many Meals on Wheels programs and supporters along his way. Meals on Wheels recipients have offered their yards as a safe camping spot for him to sleep in. In addition to the Presidential honor, Cihiwsky has been named the Meals on Wheels Association of America’s 2013 Volunteer of the Year.

Meals on Wheels is a program of Southern Maine Agency on Aging, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit dedicated to improving the physical, social, emotional and economic well-being of older adults in southern Maine. For more than four decades, SMAA has been the primary advocate for 1,000 older adults and caregivers on a daily basis. Meals on Wheels provides homebound older adults with the good nutrition and personal contact that help to remain home and “age in place”.
