Five Town CSD Adult and Community Education is holding a four-week seminar beginning Wednesday, March 6, at 6:00-8:00 pm titled Inventing the Post-Oil Economy.

Led by Paul Kando, a retired engineer who has been active in energy and building research for over 30 years, both in the U.S. and Europe, this class will discuss and cover many issues of interest to those in Maine – a state which depends heavily on oil. Suppose we were given a free hand to organize our society, economic system and governance the way we wanted: what would we do to better address social inequality and the critical issues facing country and planet, like the twin crises of anthropogenic climate change and a persistently prostrate oil-based, high unemployment economy? What kind of economic system would we envision for a post-petroleum world? What would be its key features? What steps would we devise to realize it? The key to better solutions is not better ideology, nor stronger, more impressive leadership. Answering these questions starts from the premise that no economy can exist without energy. Fossil fuels made the industrial economy possible but continued reliance on them is becoming untenable and unaffordable, and threatens catastrophic climate change. A new, sustainable economy, built on maximum efficiency in the use of energy derived from alternative sources can be realized, built from the ground up, and tailored to the needs of individual cities and agglomerations of communities built around cities.

This class will be held at Camden Hills Regional High School, 25 Keelson Dr., Rockport. For more information or to sign up contact adult ed at or 236-7800, ext 5.
