Internat’l Panel on U.S. “Pivot” to Asia-Pacific
Friday, April 11th at 2:30 pm

Bangor Room of Memorial Union

University of Maine, Orono

The Pentagon has announced a “pivot” of 60% of U.S. military forces into the Asia-Pacific in order to “contain” China. There’s a Maine connection – the “pivot” will include ships* built in Maine.

Does this “pivot” make us safer or less secure? A panel of international academics will address tis fundamental question and corollaries:

What has prompted the “rebalancing”?
Who is the provocateur in this part of the world?
What is China’s reaction?
What role does the Trans-Pacific Partnership play?
Is there a connection to developments in Ukraine?
Speakers will include:

Joseph Gerson, Director of the AFSC’s Peace & Economic Security Program, and convener of the national Working Group for Peace and Demilitarization in Asia and the Pacific.

Fumi Inoue, Graduate student at Boston College studying modern Japanese history and the history of Japan-U.S. relations. Long-time work with atomic bomb survivors’ organizations in Japan.

Subrata Ghoshroy, Research affiliate at MIT’s Program in Science, Technology & Society. Formerly served as staff for the House Armed Services Committee in Washington. Hails from India.

Hyun Lee, Member of Nodutdol, which opposes U.S. militarism and works for peaceful unification on the Korean peninsula. Co-produces Asia Pacific Forum, a weekly radio show on culture and politics of Asia and the Asian diaspora.

*One of these ships, a “stealth” destroyer, will be “christened” at Bath Iron Works on April 12th. Consider attending the protest calling for “conversion” at the shipyard.
