CARIBOU, Maine — The Penobscot Valley Ski Club, based in the Bangor area, announced a $5,000 gift to the Maine Winter Sports Center’s fundraising campaign. That campaign is looking to raise $900,000 by April 30 in an effort to keep the MWSC programs available to Maine.

“The Maine Winter Sports Center has made a large impact on Maine’s ski community, including in the greater Bangor region,” said Daniel Perkins, PVSC Vice President, said in a press release. “As a volunteer organization, the professional support, coaches training and other assistance our club has received over the years, raising the level of programming we are able to offer kids and families in the region. That support includes more than 400 pairs of cross-country skis, which have been leased to Bangor-area youth, ensuring the next generation of skiers will realize the benefits of staying healthy and getting outside during the winter. The recent addition of mountain bikes, canoes, kayaks and paddle boards adds a year-round element to their programming that has also been well received.”

The MWSC announced last week that a $100,000 gift and a separate $400,000 matching grant had been pledged by Mary Smith, a former Aroostook County resident now living in California. Mrs. Smith will match every dollar donated to the MWSC between now and April 30, up to $400,000, creating the potential for $900,000 in funding, which will be necessary for the MWSC to move forward.

“We are losing our funding on April 30th and this new fundraising campaign is necessary to ensure the continued operation of the MWSC,” said Andy Shepard, President and CEO of the MWSC, in a press release. “The PVSC has long been one of the most active ski clubs in New England and it is heartening to hear they value the work we do. These kinds of gifts will be important to our ability to continue to make a difference.”

“The Penobscot Valley Ski Club would like to challenge other Maine ski clubs to consider a donation to the Maine Winter Sports Center,” said Perkins. “We hope each club will think about the ways that MWSC has supported skiing around the state, and how much they want that work to continue into the future. Considering the generous match-challenge that MWSC has recently received, every dollar counts twice. It would be wonderful if 100 percent of Maine ski clubs could step up and make some financial contribution. It’s not about making a specific size donation as each club has it’s own financial situation, but realizing that we can all have an impact on the future of the Maine Winter Sports Center.”
