Penobscot Valley Chapter Program: Maine’s Herons and Cranes

Great Blue Heron in flight

Great Blue Herons and Sandhill Cranes are two of Maine’s largest birds. The Great Blue Heron has been experiencing localized declines while the Sandhill Crane has been increasing its numbers. Danielle D’Auria, a wildlife biologist for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife who specializes in colonial nesting bird species, will cover both the similarities and differences of these long-legged, long-necked birds, including natural history and monitoring and conservation efforts such as the volunteer-assisted Heron Observation Network of Maine (HERON).
