The Eastport Gallery’s extravaganza, PAINT EASTPORT DAY, will take place on Saturday, August 30. The activities are hosted by the Eastport Arts Center at 36 Washington Street. Every artist of any age, amateur or professional, from near or far, Gallery members or visitors, are invited to participate in painting the city and environs en plein air and to offer their works for auction at the Eastport Art Center.
Chair of the event, Joyce Weber, explains, “Paint Eastport Day is intended for the artists and bidders to have fun. The paintings are painted in the course of the day in a few hours and the bidders understand that. It’s what keeps the fun in the day and makes art accessible to everyone.” It also helps to pay the Gallery expenses as well as “a late season celebration and an opportunity to talk to everyone over a glass of wine and some nibbles.”
Paint Eastport Day takes place rain or shine and, recently, during a hurricane. “Bad weather has produced some interesting views of Eastport from windows,” muses David Orrell, a past chairman of the event.
Registration begins at the Arts Center at 7:00am and continues until 10:00am. Finished work must be brought in to the Arts Center by 3:00pm. All work must be painted on the day of the event. A reception and silent auction is held from 5:00 to 6:00pm to which the public and participating artists are cordially invited. Bidding cards for the silent auction will be sold at the door at 5:00 to residents and visitors who will enthusiastically vie with one another for the day’s work. Bidding will close at 6:00pm followed by the awarding of the work to the bidders.
Paint Eastport Day is one of the Eastport Gallery’s longest-standing traditions and, as a non-profit, is one of their principle fund raisers in support of their public outreach efforts.
