Mr. Armand Vachon, owner of One Soho Square British Pub in Old Orchard Beach, is pleased to announce two shows by rock music legend Denny Laine, member of The Moody Blues and Paul McCartney and Wings. The two shows will take place on Friday and Saturday, July 25th and 26th. Peter Asher, the two-time Grammy winner for Producer of the Year, will perform with Denny at his appearances in Old Orchard Beach. Peter Asher moved effortlessly from his role with Peter & Gordon to Music Executive with the Beatles’ Apple Records, then famously- (as in cover of Rolling Stone magazine level famous) – to Producer and Manager, handling the careers of James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and a host of others
The Friday, July 25th show, entitled “So Let Me Introduce to You, the Act You’ve Known for All These Years”, will feature Mr. Laine and his band performing The Beatles Abbey Road album, in its entirety. Both Time and Rolling Stone named Abbey Road as one of the 100 greatest albums of all time, with “Come Together”, “Here Comes The Sun”, “Something” and the side two medley culminating in “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End” among the immortal songs on the finale to the Beatles’ recording career. Of course Mr. Laine plays his own hits in the show as well, so expect the Moody Blues #1 hit “Go Now” as well as Wings smashes such as “Time to Hide”, “Live and Let Die”, “Jet”, ”Band on the Run”, and more.
Mr. Laine recorded at Abbey Road regularly, including countless sessions with Paul McCartney and Wings. “Live and Let Die”, the Wings classic and title track from the James Bond Film, was recorded there with a 40 piece orchestra conducted by George Martin. Martin produced the effort and Denny has fond memories of recording with one of music’s best known producers. “The Fool on the Hill” was being recorded at Abbey Road on one of Denny’s early visits to see his pal Paul McCartney. Wings’ Abbey Road sessions included work on Red Rose Speedway, Band on the Run, Wings at the Speed of Sound, London Town, and Back to the Egg.
The Saturday, July 26th show, entitled “If I Ever Get Out of Here, Thought of Giving it All Away”, will feature the McCartney and Wings Album Band on The Run performed in its entirety. Denny Laine celebrates the 40th anniversary of Wings’ Greatest album, “Band on the Run”, with a live on stage performance-complete and unabridged! Within a year of its release, Band On the Run” had sold over six million copies worldwide, having spawned three U.S. Top Ten hits-“Helen Wheels”, “Jet”, and the title track. The singles alone occupied the U.S. chart for 45 weeks, while the album stayed on the charts for over 2 years. The album was in the Top 30 of the Billboard 200 as recently as 2010, when a remastered version of the album was released.
By far the most successful album involving any of the Beatles following their breakup, “Band on the Run” was created by Paul McCartney, Denny Laine and Linda McCartney. The other members of Wings quit the group just prior to the departure to Lagos, Nigeria to begin sessions for the album, but out of adversity came advantage. With Paul McCartney on vocals, piano, drums, guitar, bass, and keys, and Denny Laine contributing vocals, keys, acoustic, electric and bass guitars, and Linda on keys and vocals, Band On the Run transcended the era to become an album whose deep cuts such as “Let Me Roll It”, “Picasso’s Last Words”, and “Mrs Vanderbilt” and “Bluebird” are better remembered-and played more often on classic rock radio-than most hits of the era. Expect other Wings hits such as “Live and Let Die”, and “Time to Hide” as well as Denny’s legendary lead vocal on the Moody Blues classic “Go Now” to round out this special anniversary show.
One Soho Square British Pub, located at 43 West Grand Avenue, was built by Armand Vachon and is an authentic Maine British Pub right here in Old Orchard Beach. It is influenced by his previous boss, Paul McCartney and the time Armand spent living in London and working as a roadie for Paul’s group Wings during the 1970s. During this time Armand travelled extensively around the U.K. and Europe. Occasional downtime from studio work and traveling with Wings led Armand to gravitate across the English Channel to Paris and spend lots of time along the Left Bank, frolicking in sub-terrestrial Parisian pubs and cafes; thus the idea for One Soho Square. He decided to bring a taste of the U.K. back home to Old Orchard Beach. Come see for yourself how unique and attractive this pub is, the ONLY PUB UNDER the beach in Old Orchard Beach!
