Have you looked out at night sky this year and seen churning light patterns? You can, at Jean Kigel’s art exhibit entitled OF SOLAR FLARES AND NORTHERN LIGHTS, showing at Archipelago, the Island Institute Store, 386 Main St., Rockland during July.

For the next few years, the sun’s super storms will threaten today’s communication systems and power grids. However, Kigel’s paintings capture their very real beauty. Two paintings of local, dusk-enshrouded islands transport the viewer transport the viewer from dusk to night. In her night paintings, fluttering light, created with her celebrated Asian brush techniques, evokes glowing, looping jellyfish. In these paintings, docks are awash in emerald, firs are bathed in azure and crimson. Mood is the governing word for Kigel’’s wall of paintings.
Jean Kigel specializes in Asian brush painting executed with watercolors and sumi on hand-made, Chinese papers and silk. Her work is characterized by minimalism and the use of negative space. She has traveled widely in Japan and China, and has studied with Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese masters both abroad and in the United States.
