Fort Kent ~ Sandra San Antonio, Northern Maine Medical Center’s (NMMC) Medical Practices Director, announced that Eric McNaughton, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), participated on an elite national panel dealing with policy for CRNA’s in Chicago, Illinois, on June 18 -19, 2015. The NBCRNA is in a multiyear process of developing changes in the current process for CRNA recertification. In its dedication to high standards in certification and recertification, the NBCRNA is committed to ensuring that competency evolves consistent with advances in technology and the increasing complexities of patient care. According to the NBCRNA, this dedication benefits both patients and nurse anesthetists. The national panel’s work was to make recommendations to the NBCRNA at its meeting in Chicago, Illinois, in May of this year, as it relates to the implementation of process changes for the development and implementation for enhancements to the recertification process for CRNA’s.

McNaughton began his professional career in healthcare as a Registered Nurse in 2004. A graduate of Cuyahoga Community College Applied Science in Nursing, Cleveland, Ohio, he was on the Dean’s list and a member of Phi Theta Kappa of the International Honor Society. He was first employed as a Registered Nurse in combined Cardiothoracic/Surgical Intensive Care at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio. He went on to obtain certification as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western in 2008. McNaughton served as clinical faculty for students in the baccalaureate in nursing program while pursuing a master’s degree at Case Western.

Prior to coming to NMMC in February of 2013, McNaughton was employed by Blue Ridge Healthcare System in North Carolina, where he held a leadership position in anesthesia with an emphasis in administering anesthesia for obstetric procedures. He is certified in Pediatric as well as Advanced Cardiac Life Support through the American Heart Association. He is a member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. McNaughton said of the appointment, “Being connected at the national level helps to maintain awareness of the developments of our profession.” He went on to say that his background provides a voice for CRNA’s in rural healthcare as well as providing the rural perspective to the NBCRNA.
