Newburgh native assumes command of former NAS Brunswick P-3 squadron

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Newburgh native and Navy Commander Todd Libby will assume the duties of squadron commanding officer of the Patrol Squadron (VP) 8 “Fighting Tigers” in a ceremony held onboard NAS Jacksonville on Thursday, May 9.

Cmdr. Libby, the current executive officer of VP-8, is a 1991 graduate of Hampden Academy and a 1995 graduate of the University of Maine, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.

He was commissioned out of the Black Bears’ Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) program and earned his Naval Flight Officer wings of gold in 1996.

During his 17 years of service, he has completed sea duty assignments with VP-8 and VP-10 at NAS Brunswick and a tour as assistant navigator onboard the USS Harry S. Truman in Virginia. He has served on shore duty at the Naval War College in Rhode Island, the Navy Bureau of Personnel in Tennessee, and on the staff of Commander, Fleet Air Keflavik, Iceland.

Cmdr. Libby and his wife, Alisa, have three children – Meagan, 9, Kaelyn, 7, and Samantha, 2. His parents, Thomas and Lois Libby, still reside in Newburgh. — By Lt. j.g. Jonathan Messer, Patrol Squadron 8 Public Affairs
