New Buds Popping Up Means Growth

GROWING! Baby steps are supposed to make a solid timebank and that’s what is happing in the valley. Members now include residents from Van Buren to Fort Kent. Services needed and offered are expanding. Transactions are happening. The enthusiastic group has also been getting together for an hour over coffee, on the second Thursday of the month, so far, at Robin’s Restaurant in Van Buren; possibly changing towns as membership grows.

Happy to meet face to face, members and guests talk about how a timebank should work, who needs what, and who can do what. New ideas always come up. Also details and logistics of making transactions have been interesting, as well as how to recruit new members. Get togethers are NOT mandatory, but the motivated members are dedicated to helping TB grow and bank an hour each month by coming to brainstorm. The group present in February agreed to make sure the public is notified when TBers gather because anyone interested is encouraged to come, meet members and find out more about timebanking. Next Get Together: Thursday, March 14, 6-7pm at Robin’s Restaurant.

Typically a Timebank runs by members using the web site to post services they can offer, and make requests for services needed. Everything from pet sitting, car washing to professional services can be found. All hours are equal. Timebanking is NOT a bartering system. Members ‘bank’ hours by providing services, and can use, or ‘spend’ their hours on services offered.

Information may be found at the SJV Timebanks website at www.sjv.timebanks.com . One can also ‘Like’ the SJV Timebanks on Facebook where updates about gatherings and services wanted or offered can be found in postings.
