The Maine Irish Heritage Center will honor banker and philanthropist Moira Hastings Fuller with its sixth annual Claddagh Award at a dinner celebration at the Center on Saturday, November 16th at 5:00 p.m. “We are particularly proud to honor Moira Hastings Fuller with this award,” said Mary McAleney, Chair of the Heritage Center’s Board of Directors. “Her dedication and generosity, as she has worked in partnership with her husband Bob, have made a difference to so many communities throughout our state. Moira is the first of our six Claddagh award recipients who is Irish-born; she represents for us a very special story of immigrant success.”

Moira Hastings Fuller comes from a farming family in Aughris, on the coast of County Galway near Clifden. At the age of 17 she emigrated to New York with a sister. She attended Brooklyn College and began a career in banking with the Bank of New York; after moving to Maine she worked first with Depositors Trust Company (now KeyBank) and then Kennebec Savings Bank, both in Augusta. Although she retired from Kennebec Savings after 23 years of service, she retains ties to the bank as a corporator.

Moira is a member of the Friends of the Blaine House, the Friends of the Maine State Museum and the Kennebec Historical Society. She is an enthusiastic plein air painter. Her husband Bob is an attorney who served in the office of the Maine Attorney General and worked in the Augusta office of Pierce Atwood. He also served in the U.S. Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps, from which he retired with the rank of Captain. He is a published writer.

Moira and Bob live in Winthrop; they have four children and seven grandchildren. Three of Moira’s sisters and three brothers still live in Ireland.

The Claddagh Award—which represents traditional Irish values of friendship, loyalty and love— is given each year by the Maine Irish Heritage Center to an individual of Irish heritage from Maine who has devoted his or her life to community service. Moira will receive the award at a ceremony that begins at 5 o’clock on Saturday, November 16th at the Irish Heritage Center, located at the corner of Gray and State Streets in Portland, Maine.
