PORTLAND, Maine — Lung cancer and other lung disorders continue to be a serious public health problem. In fact, each year over 200,000 people get lung cancer, which can be easily detected with proper screenings.

In response to the growing need, Mercy Health System of Maine, a comprehensive healthcare provider, announced the relocation of its Portland Thoracic Surgery practice from the Mercy State Street location to its new state-of-the-art suite at the Medical Office Building located on the Mercy Fore River Campus. The thoracic surgery team including leading physician, Dr. Seth Blank, MD, together with Joseph Schrader, PA-C and Scott Edgecomb RN, RRT, CCRN, moved in earlier in the spring.

The practice is known for its top quality and comprehensive diagnosis, prevention, treatment and management of diseases of the lungs, esophagus, respiratory tract and chest, including cancer. The Thoracic Surgery team is also known for its comprehensive multi-disciplinary care that includes nutrition counseling and treatment planning, including weekly tumor boards, which include all physician specialists involved with a patient’s care.

The practice is also celebrating the anniversary of its lung screening program, launched in the spring 2013, and with the latest news from the United States Preventive Task Force recommending lung cancer screenings for high risk individuals be a covered service by insurers, is expecting to see continued demand.

Dr. Blank explains, “Matters affecting the lungs and the thoracic system are on the rise. We are pleased to continue to offer a comprehensive program for lung cancer screenings and other vital services through our new office, improving the patient experience and access to care.”

“Portland Thoracic Surgery practice is an integral service component within a comprehensive network of care in the Mercy system, integrating departments such as primary care, oncology and surgery,” said Eileen Skinner, President and CEO of Mercy Health System of Maine. “With Dr. Seth Blank as the lead physician, Portland Thoracic Surgery offers the highest level of care available in Maine and provides each patient with the compassion and warmth they expect from Mercy.”
