THOMASTON, Maine — Joan Vargas of Thomaston has accepted the volunteer position of Toys for Tots coordinator for Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties. Joan is a lifelong volunteer serving in her children’s schools, with the Marine Corps League, the Knox County Humane Society, and with many other organizations. She also volunteered with Toys for Tots in 2012 alongside her husband, Richard Vargas, who is the former Department of Maine Marine Corps League Commandant. Meet the new Toys for Tots Coordinator at the “Get Your Grill On” event 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 21, at Rockland Pet Quarters. Joan will be serving up hot dogs and hamburgers to anyone who stops by and drops of a new unwrapped toy. All donated toys will go to children in need in Knox, Lincoln, and Waldo counties. “Get Your Grill On” is being held in conjunction with Harbor Plaza’s Summer Beginnings event. There will be great sidewalk sales along with other fun-filled family activities. “The goal of the Toys for Tots program is to collect new unwrapped toys and distribute them to children in the community that might not otherwise have Christmas presents to open,” said Joan Vargas. In previous years, Toys for Tots only collected toys during the holiday season but in 2014 they will begin collecting them year round in order to ensure every child has a present to open on Christmas. Join Toys for Tots for this Christmas in June “Get Your Grill On” event and drop of a toy to get the Christmas spirit rolling early! “Please keep an eye open for toy sales throughout the year and donate them to Toys for Tots,” said Joan Vargas, Toys for Tots Coordinator. Last year Toys for Tots in Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties collected 6,665 toys and donated them to 2,288 local children. “I would like to thank everyone for their support in previous years. Our community is always very generous. Christmas will be here sooner than you think and we have a lot of work to do to fill the areas needs,” said Vargas, Toys for Tots Coordinator. Toys for Tots is operating from the Nativity Lutheran Church in Rockport, who has generously donated the space. Donations and toy pick up at the Church will be made by appointment only. For donations or toy requests call Joan Vargas at 354-6282 or email Donation boxes will be available at locations across the three counties starting November 1, 2014.
