Maine Family Business Awards speaker turns cancer into positive

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Richard Stephenson, founder and board chairman of the family-owned Cancer Treatment Centers of America, takes a message across America that is inspired by the death of his mother from bladder cancer.

“I was unsatisfied with the treatment options available to my mother,” Stephenson explained while opening the first CTCA hospital. His mission: “Change the face of cancer.”

 Stephenson will expand on the CTCA mission, and more, when he speaks on May 13 at the Maine Family Business Awards at the South Portland Marriott. The 14th Awards, open to the public, is presented by the Maine Institute for Family-Owned Business, in partnership with the law firm Verrill Dana.

 Stephenson’s demand as a speaker has paralleled the growth of the for-profit Cancer Treatment Centers. Now in its 25th year, CTCA owns five hospitals, plus outpatient clinics, that provide both conventional and alternative treatments. “We never stop searching for, and providing, powerful and innovative therapies to heal the whole person, improve quality of life and restore hope,” the company states.

Although Stephenson, who is also involved in finance and real estate, brings a serious message, he reportedly makes cancer a positive subject, and his energizing talk is sprinkled with humor. A graduate of Indiana’s Wabash College and Northwestern University School of Law, he is a horse enthusiast, having established Tudor Oaks Farm near his Illinois home.

His son, Dr. Christopher Stephenson, is a board certified general internist who says “The most important thing in caring for patients is caring about them.”

Richard Stephenson’s daughter, Annie Holsonback, serves on the CTCA board of directors and heads up her real estate company. Philanthrophy is her passion and she’s dedicated her life to cancer awareness and research.

The Awards feature success stories from many corners of Maine, and are presented in six categories, to firms large and small, and caps a year in which the non-profit Institute provides owners and employees continuing education, networking, and consulting. Categories are large business (over 25 employees), small business, customer service, first generation, innovation, and community service. Awards’ recipients are not revealed until the close of the evening’s program.
