BAR HARBOR — Maine author Morgan Callan Rogers is at the Jesup Memorial Library, 34 Mount Desert St., on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. with “Ruby Red Heart in a Cold Blue Sea,” a charming coming-of-age tale set in the coastal Maine of the 1960s.
It was an international hit in hardcover and is out now in paperback. “This is kind of a love letter to the people I grew up with , and am still privileged to know,” said the author, who grew up in Bath as part of a Maine family of many generations.
In the novel, young Florine Gilham’s mother disappears during a weekend trip, and her seemingly idyllic childhood is shattered – the heart falls out of Florine’s life as she and her father struggle to manage their loss. Both sustained and challenged by the advice and expectations of her family and neighbors, Florine grows up with her spirit intact. And when her father’s past comes to call, she must accept that life won’t ever be the same while keeping her mother vivid in her memories. What happened to Florine’s mother? And ultimately what happens to Florine? You’ll just have to read the book to find out.
Ms. Rogers has been, in her lifetime, a librarian, journalist, actress, editor, and a teacher. She has a Bachelor of Arts in English and an MFA in Creative Writing . Now at work on another novel, she splits her time between Maine and South Dakota.
Sherman’s Books, the co-sponsor of this event, will be on hand with books for purchase that night and part of the proceeds from all volumes sold that night will be donated to the Jesup.
Join us for a memorable evening.
