The 250th Machiasport Celebration Committee is pleased to announce that an historic exhibit of Washington County photographs, including Machiasport images, will be on display during the month of May at the Fort O’Brien School. The exhibit was funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, and it will be introduced at the Grand Opening by Kevin Johnston, curator and archivist from the Penobscot Marine Museum.
These Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographs were taken a century ago are aesthetically beautiful to view, and are fascinating on many levels for the history and the sense of place that they convey. The founder of the company sent his crews with their box cameras into tiny towns all over the region, instructing them to ask local citizens what was important about their town. The photos were shot from 1909 through the 1950s and were used as photo postcards which many residents have collected and enjoyed over the years. Photo prints are available from the museum, with proceeds from their sale going to expand the collection.
The 250th Committee encourages the public to come and learn about our history and heritage and help the children to appreciate how people lived and worked in the days before computers and cellphones.
The Grand Opening for this traveling exhibit is, scheduled for May 10th at 1:00 p.m. at the Fort O’Brien School Library.
Other Exhibit Dates and Times include:
May 16, 17 (1-3 p.m.)
