MACHIAS, Maine – Machias’s Good Morning Project is seeking senior citizens and other housebound neighbors who could use the company and security of a daily telephone call.

Volunteer Coordinator Megan Galligan and the Machias Bay Chamber of Commerce have initiated the program and already 19 volunteers have stepped up to make the daily well-being check-in calls. Each volunteer caller has signed a confidentiality agreement and the program is free.

“This will enable our neighbors to feel safe and secure, knowing they will get that telephone call each day,” Galligan said this week. “We are prepared to call for help should they experience an emergency. But we are also aware that for many housebound adults, this program is as much about socialization as security.”

Volunteers will call each day and ask participants a few simple questions, Galligan said, but no personal information will be requested. The questions will be similar to “How are you?” and “Do you need anything?” Those getting the calls do not have to live in Machias to participate in the program.

The Chamber is also creating a list of volunteers that would be willing to clear snow or perform other small chores that a housebound person may need.

Anyone wishing to sign themselves or a family member up for the daily telephone call may come to the Chamber office at 11 Main Street to fill out a form, call the Chamber office at 255-4402, or Galligan at 479-6395.
