Machias Christmas Festival set for Dec. 5-7

MACHIAS, Maine — Machias will be celebrating the holiday season in style with three days of events that include a parade, signing contest, a visit from Santa Claus, children’s crafts, and an Ugly Sweater Dance.

All events and prizes are being sponsored by Machias Savings Bank, Edward Pellon and Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.

The events kick off at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5 at the University of Maine at Machias Performing Arts Center with the Voice of Down East Maine singing contest. This event is sponsored by Machias Savings Bank. Free admission.

On Friday, Dec. 6, the town is being encouraged to turn on their holiday lights at 5 p.m. Rose M. Gaffney REACH Students are sponsoring a Light up Main Street Contest. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 businesses. The REACH Students will also be sponsoring the luminary display along Main Street on Friday and Saturday evening. At 5 p.m., the town Christmas Tree will be lit in front of Station 98. Music will be provided by several groups of carolers and the winners of the Voice of Down East Maine Contest. The new Station 98 ice skating rink will be lit for the first time and open for use, weather permitting. From 4-6 p.m. there will be children’s crafts at the Lee Pellon Center. Food vendors will be available.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, a parade of floats, walking groups and musicians will begin at UMM and end at the Lee Pellon Center-be looking for Santa on the last float. Float judging will take place during line-up and prizes awarded: $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third. At 5:30 p.m. Santa will greet children and provide presents created by The Down East Correctional Center at the Lee Pellon Center.

The Machias Bay Area Chamber is sponsoring an Ugly Sweater Dance at the Lee Pellon Center from 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $5 if you are wearing an “ugly” holiday themed sweater and $8 if you are not. There will be prizes and ribbons for the top three ugliest sweaters. There will be a cash bar and a disc jockey.
