MACHIAS, Maine — The Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is collaborating with the town of Machias and Washington County: One Community to promote Walking Wednesdays, an event aimed at promoting wellness.
“Healthy employees are more productive, have better ideas and are happier,” Sharon Mack, MBACC Executive Director said this week. “We want to urge everyone to walk or bike to work on Wednesdays.” Anyone that lives too far from their workplace can always drive into town and park in one of the town’s several public parking lots and then walk to work, she said.
“Not only will the Walking Wednesdays program benefit Machias workers, but visitors coming to and through Machias will see a vibrant, healthy community, rather than empty sidewalks,” Mack added. A walking and biking community is more attractive to future development, which is a key goal of the Machias Area Bay Chamber of Commerce. “The quality of life for their employees is very key to future investors,” Mack said.
The chamber is partnering in this venture with Machias, which recently received a $10,000 two-year Healthy Main Street Grant from the Maine Downtown Center. It is being administered by Angela Fochesato of WC:OC. Fochesato said she is creating walking maps and they will soon be available at the chamber office or through a Machias employer.
In order to measure the Walking Wednesday program’s success, anyone participating is urged to call the chamber office at 255.4402.
