$1 from every iced coffee sold on May 23 in Maine and in New Hampshire’s Coos and Carroll Counties will support Pediatric Emergency Medicine

PORTLAND — Local Dunkin’ Donuts business owners are partnering with Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital  at Maine Medical Center for their 2018 Maine Iced Coffee Day on Wednesday, May 23. Participating locations in Maine and in New Hampshire’s Coos and Carroll counties will donate $1 from every iced coffee sold on Iced Coffee Day to support Pediatric Emergency Medicine at BBCH. Customers can participate by purchasing any size or flavor iced coffee at regular price on May 23.

Maine Dunkin’ Donuts business owners are proud to support BBCH with their current five-year, $250,000 commitment that follows their previous $250,000 donation to fund the Dunkin’ Donuts Hospital-Based Teacher program permanently. The funds raised on Maine’s Iced Coffee Day directly impact the more than 15,000 Maine families who visit the Pediatric Emergency Unit each year.

Through these commitments, Dunkin’ Donuts business owners have helped BBCH ensure Maine children are getting the best care possible. Recent benefits include the pediatric emergency room, which is now open 24 hours a day, a full-time pediatric emergency Child Life specialist and a new pediatric ambulance.

“Iced Coffee Day has become one of our most popular days at Dunkin’ Donuts as we all come together to support The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital and kick off Iced Coffee season,” said Molly Loh, Dunkin’ Donuts Integrated Marketing Manager. “Last year we donated over $70,000 and are excited to see what we can donate this year.”

“I am not only head of pediatric emergency medicine at BBCH, but the proud father of two children. I know firsthand the importance of providing child-centric care to help address both their physical and emotional needs,” said Nathan Mick, M.D., Assistant Chief of Emergency Medicine at Maine Medical Center.  “The generosity of the local Dunkin’ Donuts business owners allows us to make sure our youngest patients can get back to doing what they love most.”

Every year, thousands of families visit the Pediatric Emergency Unit at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. In October 2017, 7-year-old Caroline Lovejoy of Kennebunk slid off her horse and broke her elbow. Arriving late at night, her parents were thankful for dedicated, appropriately sized medical equipment and gowns, while Caroline focused on choosing a Disney movie on the in-room TV. The Child Life specialist, who Caroline calls “my friend,” put her mind at ease by showing her all that she could still do with her broken elbow.

“We are forever grateful to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital for not only healing our daughter, but ensuring she felt safe and happy during her stay,” said Caroline’s mother, Maeghan Lovejoy. “Just hours after surgery, she participated in the annual BBCH Trick or Treating event where she exclaimed, ‘This is the best day ever!’ Seeing the outpouring of love and support for these children and the smiles on their faces was truly something special.”
