BANGOR, Maine — More than 250 people attended the annual Literacy Tea on Sunday, April 6, at John Bapst Memorial High School.

Volunteer designers decorated more than 30 tables using different children’s books as themes. Maine children’s author and illustrator Chris Van Dusen read his book “The Circus Ship” to an audience of children, their parents, and other book lovers.

The Literacy Tea is a major fundraiser of Literacy Volunteers. This year’s tea raised nearly $8,000 in revenues and more than $4,500 of in-kind support. Literacy Volunteers raises 100 percent of its annual budget and is slated to help a record number of low literate adults — more than 300 this fiscal year.
