PORTLAND, Maine — Catherine Wygant Fossett, for three years executive director of the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce, brings the same title to her new post with the Institute for Family-Owned Business, a Maine non-profit.
Wygant Fossett replaces Gina Weathersby, the Institute’s executive director since 2011, who is relocating to her native Newnan, Georgia.
Wygant Fossett inherits an organization that has served family-owned businesses for 20 years through seminars, consultation, and networking events, designed with the complexities of family ownership in mind. Family businesses are seen as the backbone of Maine’s economy: an estimated 80% are family owned.
The Institute’s board chairman, John Isaacson, said in a press release, “Catherine’s skills seem ideal for the Institute, since she’s travelled the globe and worked with such a broad range of businesses at the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber. That parallels the Institute’s membership in many, many ways.”
Wygant Fossett traveled extensively as the daughter of a U.S. Foreign Service officer before settling in Portland. She split 20 years between Hewins Travel, as director of marketing, and Hurley Travel Experts, as director of sales. A graduate of Bates College, she has served on dozens of boards including the MidCoast Chamber Council, Mobilize MidCoast Maine leadership committee, Maine Sports Commission, and Rotary. She currently serves on the Boothbay Civic Association and the Advisory Board for the Boothbay Sea and Science Center.
Institute programming typically includes (although not offered every year) succession and estate planning, conflict resolution, leadership development, compensation and performance measurement, strategic planning and taxes.
Two summer events, “Women in Family Business Golf Clinic,” takes place Aug. 12 at Nonesuch River Golf Club in Scarborough, followed on Aug. 14 by “Summerfest” at Yankee Marina & Boatyard in Yarmouth. The Institute will hold a Family Governance Program on Sept. 17, and “Women in Family Business” Affinity Group on Nov. 13, at Visibility Clothing Store in Portland, which is a program and networking event.
