The Maine Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure announces a partnership with Maine Race for the Cure Statewide Presenting Sponsor, Hannaford Supermarkets, to encourage early Race registration and fundraising. Participants who register for the Komen Maine Race for the Cure on or before June 30th will have a chance to win a $100 Hannaford Supermarkets gift card. Also, participants who raise at least $100 by the same date will have their names entered for a second chance in the drawing. There are separate drawings for each Race in Bangor and Portland.

The Komen Maine Race for the Cure® first started in Bangor in 1997. It has grown steadily over the years, reaching a record breaking 5,600 participants and raising over $330,000 in 2010. The Race expanded to Portland in 2010 as well, drawing 1,600 participants and raising over $150,000 last year.

The 2012 Maine Races will take place on September 9th in Portland and September 16th in Bangor.

The first Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® took place in Dallas, TX in 1983 with 800 participants. Today, the Komen Race for the Cure® series is the largest 5K series in the world. To date, the Komen Maine Affiliate has invested nearly $2.6 million right here in the State of Maine to education, screening and treatment programs, as well as over $750,000 to breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grants Program. Nearly $500,000 has returned to Maine in the form of research grants through that program.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Promise: to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. Locally, Komen funds programs to help Maine’s uninsured and under-insured get the breast cancer screening and treatment they need to survive and improve quality of life. These programs are needed now more than ever. Join the Race for the Cure in making a difference in our community.
