ROCKLAND, Maine — The Island Institute has announced that Katherine Tagai joined the organization as the new community development associate on Monday, Aug. 19.

Tagai will provide program support for several of the Institute’s core community development efforts, including the Island Fellows, the Island Sustainability through Leadership and Entrepreneurship (ISLE) program and the Maine Islands Coalition. She will serve as a resource for the participants in these programs, and also organize and facilitate meetings and events connected to these initiatives.

Tagai comes to the Institute with experience as both a Peace Corps volunteer on an island in the South Pacific and as an AmeriCorps VISTA member. She most recently has been employed as an admissions officer at Sterling College in Vermont.

Karen Burns, the Institute’s community and economic development director, says this new position will be of tremendous help in ensuring that three of the organization’s most valued and visible resources to Maine’s year-round and remote coastal communities will continue to be of the highest quality possible.

“I’m really excited about having Kate join our community development team. She brings a vast knowledge of reporting, recruitment and field work and is eager to learn more about the Maine Islands,” Burns said.
