Islesford Boatworks is proud to announce that a launching will be held for its 2013 boat on Friday, August 9th. This year’s boat- a 14-foot decked canoe, the “fiddlehead”- was designed by Canadian boatbuilder Harry Bryan, and has been crafted by a group of around 15 kids from the ages of 7 to 17.
The pirate-themed launch will be held at Sand Beach on Little Cranberry Island. A raffle will be drawn for the boat the following day at the Cranberry Folk Festival in the Islesford town field. Raffle tickets for the boat are $20 each.

The boat building school, now in its seventh year on Little Cranberry Island, is devoted to teaching children the art of wooden boatbuilding. Children from ages 7 to 12 meet Wednesdays and Fridays from 8am to noon. A teen program meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the teens are given an open shop time to work on their own projects, while the teens also help to craft the boat. An experienced staff of adult volunteers led by a master boatbuilder guides students in constructing the boat as well as in making their own oars and paddles. The boat that they produce is either raffled or auctioned at the end of the summer.
