IPM’s Salvadoran Staff Member Visits Maine, April 20-25, 2012

Erika Murcia, IPM’s Regional Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean, will be visiting Maine from April 20-25. Founded in 1974 and operating on five continents, IPM works across borders of faith and culture on behalf of children, women, and youth to create partnerships that build justice, peace, and hope. While based on Mount Desert Island Erika will be meeting with IPM’s Maine Affinity Group and addressing Academic Institutions, Congregations, Libraries, Non Profit Partner Organizations, and other Friends of IPM.

Erika joined IPM in 2010 as the Regional Coordinator for IPM’s Latin America & the Caribbean Office in El Salvador. Erika provides strategic leadership for IPM’s initiatives for the entire Latin America & the Caribbean Region. Her work with IPM includes Regional Office management, support for IPM Project Partners, resource mobilization, and facilitation of IPM Immersion Experience Programs. Erika has convened two Regional Conferences for IPM’s Project Partners in the Latin America & Caribbean Region including Brasil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, and Nicaragua. She is fluent in Spanish and English and is currently studying Portuguese.

Before joining the IPM Family, Erika received her B.A. in International Relations from the Universidad de El Salvador where she researched the influence of the Muslim community in El Salvador from 2001-2008. Upon graduation, Erika embarked upon series of opportunities related to her experience and education. She has served as a research associate for several professors from the US and Canada in the areas of Gender Studies and Peace Studies. Additionally, she facilitated several North American delegations to El Salvador for other like-minded NGOs.

Erika is a dynamic and engaging speaker able to discuss such topics as: The History of El Salvador (including the Civil War), Contemporary Socio-Political Topics in Central America, the Central American Free Trade Agreement; Environmental Justice Initiatives; Interfaith Relations in El Salvador; Liberation Theology & Social Change; and, Women’s Empowerment in Latin America.
