Holly Near Tickets on Sale Now for August 15th Concert

Holly Near/Emma's Revoluiton Concert for Community in Orono August 15th -- Tickets on sale now!

Folk singer, composer,and one of the founders of the Women’s Music Movement, Holly Near, will perform in Orono on Firday, August 15th at 7:30 p.m. at HauckAuditorium at the University of Maine. She will be joined in a Concert for Community by special guests Pat Humphries and Sandy O of Emma’s Revolution, a duo which contributes guitar, banjo, ukelele and exquisitely complex vocal harmonies. Holly Near has worked for over 40 years as a singer, songwriter and teacher. With her powerful voice, wry sense of humor, and curious mind she interprets the songs of the folk tradition, Broadway, cabaret and pop with equal grace. Performing material from Near’s recent recording, Peace Becomes You as well as old favorites from her earlier repertoire and a few standards from the American Songbook, Near presents an uplifting and entertaining evening of music.

Throughout her long career Holly has worked with a wide array of musicians, including Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Arlo Guthrie, Mercedes Sosa, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, Harry Belafonte, and many others.

Holly Near has been recognized many times for her work for social change, including honors from the ACLU, the National Lawyers Guild, the National Organization for Women, and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences; she was named Ms. Magazine Woman of the Year and received the Legends of Women’s Music Award.

Tickets for the concert are $20 and are for sale at the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine, 96 Harlow Street, Suite 100 , Bangor. The concert is sponsored by the Peace & Justice Center, the University of Maine’s Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies and the University of Maine’s student group, the Maine Peace Action Committee which will celebrate its 40th anniversary at the concert. for more information call 942-9343.
