The Castine Historical Society will kick off the winter holiday season with an open house at the Abbott School on the Castine Town Common on Saturday, December 1 from 11:00am until 3:00pm. The public is invited to attend this open house which celebrates the return of the Castine Bicentennial Quilt, and will feature light seasonal refreshments and an opportunity to do holiday shopping at the Society’s Gift Shop.
Designed and constructed by sixty members of the Castine community and presented to the Castine Historical Society in celebration of the town’s bicentennial in 1996, the Castine Bicentennial Quilt is 24 feet by 6 feet in dimension, with seven panels depicting the history of Castine from its earlier settlement by Europeans in the early 1600s through the late 20th century. The quilt is typically on display during the Society’s summer season, but this year’s popular “Schooner Bowdoin on the Greenland Patrol” exhibit, co-sponsored with Maine Maritime Academy, filled the exhibition hall at the Abbott School, leaving no room to display the quilt. With the assistance of a group of volunteers, the quilt has recently been re-hung and will remain on display throughout the winter season; arrangements can be made to view the quilt after the open house by emailing info@castinehistoricalsociety.org or calling 207-326-4118.
